Root Canal Treatment

Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve of the tooth is affected by decay or infection. It normally happens when a cavity is allowed, through neglect to reach all the way to the pulp, or if the restoration is deep or even trauma may cause the nerve damage. In order, to save the tooth, the pulp, nerves, bacteria and any decay are removed and the resulting space is filled with medicated dental materials, which restore the tooth to its full function.

Signs and Symptoms for Possible Root Canal therapy:

• An abscess on the gums.
• Swelling and/or tenderness
• Sensitivity to hold and cold.
• Severe toothache.
• Pain on biting or chewing

What does Root Canal therapy involve?
Root canal procedure requires at least three appointments. While the tooth is numb, an access opening is made on the top of the tooth and a series of root canal files are placed into the opening, one at a time, removing the pulp, nerve tissue, and bacteria. Once the tooth is cleaned, it will be sealed with either a permanent filling or if additional appointments are needed, a temporary filling will be placed. In addition, all the teeth that have the root canal treatment should have a crown to protect the tooth and prevent it from breaking.
